There’s a remarkable transformation taking place in Rwanda, a country once overshadowed by it's history. From the skyward mountains and lush rainforests to green cities and countryside villages, the sense of optimism is impossible to ignore. Its inspirational tale of revival is no more apparent than in Kigali, the booming capital. Here, roads are clean, plastic bags are banned, parks are tidy and widespread. It’s all thanks to a monthly community cleanup called ‘Umuganda’, in which every Rwandan living in Kigali – including the president himself – gets involved. Time your trip right, and you can help too. Nestled in the corners of this landlocked country are several pristine national parks. Hike along the trails of Nyungwe Forest, one of Africa’s largest protected rainforests, and track chimpanzees in their natural habitat. Or chill on the shores of Lake Kivu, with its quiet beaches and rocky coves. But Rwanda’s most spectacular attraction lies to the north-west: the steamy forests of Volcanoes National Park – home to wild troops of mountain gorillas. You can find a range of hotels and guesthouses spread through Rwanda, though the bulk are located in Kigali and towns near national parks. There are also some lodges available by Lake Kivu.
