Staying at Solar de Vila Meã was a beautiful experience from start to finish. The first thing that struck me was the setting — it’s absolutely stunning. Surrounded by vineyards and peaceful countryside, the entire property feels like a hidden retreat. Every view, whether from the room, the pool, or the garden, looked like a painting. There’s a real sense of calm and space here that’s hard to describe but easy to fall in love with. The restaurant, Barro, completely exceeded expectations. The staff were warm, attentive, and genuinely proud of what they serve, which made the whole experience even more special. If you’re looking for a place that combines natural beauty with exceptional food and a sense of quiet luxury, I couldn’t recommend Solar de Vila Meã more highly.

We like just about everything about this little guest house. Everything was very clean. There was a working teapot and coffee maker, and a fridge that we probably could have turned on. We did not try the breakfast, though so we have no report there. The day we left, they let us keep our luggage in the lobby until time to leave the city.

Because at the late and early hours of traveling from ALGARVE TO BARCELOS, the staff provide always a plate of food for the long hour of trabeling and work, in three situations which were even outside typical lunch ou dinner time, which was both exellent and very generous. Really felt at home.

The place has a quiet charm about it. It is clean, the host is great and very responsive… We requested for a big pot to cook our dinner and without hesitation, he provided one from his own home.

We were greeted with loud barking. Nevertheless, we fearlessly opened the gate and, as often experienced in Portugal, were once again attacked by excited 1 1/2 dogs who could hardly contain their joy and would have loved to lick us from head to toe. Then Luis, the host, appeared and greeted us warmly, but fortunately left it at a handshake. :D :D The flat is huge, bright, spotlessly clean and well ventilated. The furnishings are very tasteful. Everything is provided in the kitchen and we were even given wine and tea as presents. A wonderful surprise that was not mentioned at all in the description: A small river flows directly behind the (very beautiful) garden. Luis had built a staircase so that you could get in for a swim. The water was warmer than the Atlantic and very refreshing on the hot days. Many, many thanks for the wonderful days, dear Monica and Luis! You were not only helpful but incredibly welcoming and heart warming. It was a pity we had only booked 5 days. We felt very comfortable with you and will definitely be back. Até breve! (and greetings to the doggies!)

Perfect location right in the centre of Barcelos. 5 mins walk to the main square, shops, grocery store, cafes and restaurants. Great time to visit over Easter and the Festa da Cruzes. We enjoyed our stay and the accommodation at In Barreta was perfect in meeting our needs for space, location and amenities. Barcelos is a great central location allowing you to visit many of the beautiful cities and towns in the Braga region including Braga, Guimarães, Viana do Castelo, Ponte de Lima, Valenca, and beach towns like Esposende and Apuglia. You are also 1 hour away from the Spanish border to the north crossing from Valenca into Tui Spain. And 2 hours away from Santiago de Compostela where the renowned Camino de Santiago ends. In fact there are many pilgrims who cross through all of these town on their various routes along the Camino and we encountered several while sightseeing. If you decide to cross over to Spain, keep in mind that the time changes to one hour ahead when you cross the border! Also you are less than a hour drive from Porto and other smaller surrounding villages and towns including the national park of Geres. And you’re 2 hours away from the Douro valley wine region. Caesar and Olga are very fine hosts. We highly recommend this accommodation and we will definitely stay here upon our return to Barcelos.
