Esk Terrace is named after the river which runs through Whitby and which came up to the front of the houses in the past , before the mud flats were reclaimed and became a car park and railway line. The Terrace used to be called Captains’ Walk as so many sea captains lived in the tall, Victorian houses. There is a private road in front of the properties and each house has one or two parking places there. During holiday times, picturesque steam trains puff past or vintage diesels appear and the railway station is a very short walk away for a little trip. Being a tall house, we have lots of stairs and our rooms are at the top so unfortunately not suitable for people with mobility problems. This is a quiet area yet all the amenities of the town are close by. We are not a sterile 'chain hotel', instead we are very much a characterful, family home with two beautiful guest rooms. We don't have facilities like locks on bedroom doors as we like guests to feel like they are welcomed as friends. You have two rooms to choose from - the first is our River View room which has wonderful views over the Esk. The second room is our Cosy room which has views over the quiet back street. Neither of the rooms are huge, as bedrooms at the top of Victorian houses tend to be more compact, but the beds are extremely comfortable with luxurious linens, thoughtful furnishings and bijoux en-suite bathrooms. Breakfast is served around a large table set for all of our guests, with wonderful views over our garden and out to the river.
We love meeting people, especially people from abroad. We have two miniature dachshunds who are very much part of our family and they also love meeting our guests!
This is a lovely old Terrace, formerly known as Captains’Walk , as sea captains lived here. Triver runs below the terrace and we have views of yachts and boats of many types. From the garden there is a view of theAbbey and the historic old town . The railway runs along the riverside and there are steam trains chugging along almost every day, and now and then vintage diesels. The main attractions of the town are an easy , flat , few minutes walk away. The town is surrounded by beautiful scenery with little ,coastal villages and picturesque, inland hamlets where you can find woodland walks, moorland streams and cosy pubs.
