The cottage was perfect for our family stay. Very welcoming and hospitable. Everything was spotless inside and out. The cottage is positioned in between Whitby and Staithes. The latter can be reached in 20 minutes by foot. We will return!

Idlewild is over 160 years old; cosy with a good sized living/dining room with two sofas, a 40” television, free wifi and Netflix. Relax on the sofas and enjoy a roaring fire in the log burner, or be out and about enjoying all the North Yorkshire Moors and Coast offer. The kitchen is separate to the living space, well equipped, with washing machine, fridge/freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster for your convenience. The property does not allow pets, so you can rest assured that those with sensitivities to animal fur etc., can enjoy a sneeze free stay and your children can play in the garden safely. The linens and bedding are hypoallergenic. The cottage is well equipped and easily accommodates 4 adults having 2 bedrooms (1 king size bed and pine bunk beds) plus an additional sleeping offer of a double sofa bed with a cosy 8” thick mattress for 2 additional people if required. A ceiling fan is installed in the larger bedroom. A travel cot is available. Wind break, beach chairs, beach towels. Fire safety blankets and extinguishers, first aid kit, socket covers, night lights, stair gate, child's toilet seat and step.
I've owned Idlewild for 16 years, and it’s always great to share the lovely atmosphere it gives out. Many people have shared the enjoyment it gives and that delights me to know that its special kind of magic is so loved. If you enjoy starry skies, this is the place for you. In past careers I've been a Magistrate, and Head of Business Services for a large Community Interest Company. Social fairness, sustainability, environment, diversity and kindness matter to me a lot. I'm wanting to learn to sail, and I wild swim. I love walking, and foraging. Reading is a pleasure but also a discipline. I alternate a novel, then a classic (some of which have been really tough to get through) I just couldn't make myself finish, or understand (!), Ulysses! 2025 has been my first season as a host, opening Idlewild outside of my circle of folk. I'm thrilled that you are looking at this post. You'll be most welcome.
Idlewild Cottage is a "whole-property let" with a private parking space and large enclosed, secure, garden with furnished summer house for you to enjoy. Hinderwell is history rich being mentioned in the Doomsday Book of 1086 and is within the stunning North Yorkshire National Park, with all it has to offer. You are also close to the moors and the woods for walking and horse riding. There is a twice an hour bus service, within 2 minutes’ walk, taking you up to Saltburn/Redcar/Middlesbrough or across to Whitby making access to the NYM Steam Railway in easy reach and further buses to Scarborough, Pickering etc . The village butcher's shop (long standing local family business), sells delicious local produce. For those special occasions, there is Number 20, a Michelin Guide detailed restaurant within walking distance – absolutely fabulous. The supermarket is a mile away. Runswick Bay is a 20 minute walk away, Staithes harbour around 30 minutes to walk - there are buses most of the way as well. Fabulous beaches also at Sandsend, Catasty and Whitby of course, which embraces the Gothic traditions, Steam Punk, Pirates and the occasional Viking - all absolutely marvellous.
