Mackenzie Cottage is more than just a place to stay – it’s a true Highland retreat. Nestled in the quiet beauty of Oldshoremore, our little cottage blends traditional charm with modern comfort. What makes it unique is its sense of place: the views that change with the light, the peace that wraps around you the moment you arrive, and the feeling of being close to nature while still enjoying a cosy, welcoming home. Unlike larger or busier holiday lets, Mackenzie Cottage offers an intimate setting that’s perfect for slowing down – whether it’s sipping your morning tea while watching deer on the hills, curling up by the fire after a day’s exploring, or simply enjoying the silence. Each detail has been chosen with care, reflecting the character of the Highlands and the warmth of true hospitality. It’s this combination of setting, charm, and atmosphere that makes Mackenzie Cottage a place guests remember – and want to return to. As part of its traditional character, the cottage has low ceilings, so it’s especially comfortable for guests under 6ft 2in, adding to the cosy, authentic feel of this charming Highland hideaway.
We’re a small family passionate about Highland life, creativity, and the outdoors. Alongside Mackenzie Cottage, we run a little craft shop on site, showcasing handmade pieces inspired by the landscape around us. When we’re not welcoming guests or working with local makers, you’ll most likely find us outside, walking the hills, beachcombing, or simply enjoying the changing skies. Our aim is to share that same sense of peace and inspiration with everyone who visits, whether through the cosy retreat of Mackenzie Cottage or the unique finds in our craft shop.
Guests love Oldshoremore for its unspoilt beauty and peaceful atmosphere. The neighbourhood is best known for its stunning white-sand beach and dramatic coastal walks, with wildlife often spotted along the headlands. Nearby you’ll find the charming village of Kinlochbervie, the beautiful Oldshoremore or Sandwood Beach, and easy access to Smoo Cave, Cape Wrath, and the North Coast 500 route. For a taste of local life, there are cafes, cosy restaurants serving fresh seafood, and craft shops celebrating Highland heritage. It’s the perfect base for exploring the wild, rugged heart of Sutherland. Do note that many local attractions, cafés, and restaurants operate seasonally and may be closed from October to March — making the quieter months perfect for those seeking peace, starry skies, and the raw beauty of the Highlands at their most tranquil.
