Tig Cottage is a beautiful place for you to retreat, relax, reset and revive yourself! Sit surrounded by trees, listening to birdsong and our burbling river, taking time for you. Relaxed enough? Tig Cottage is the perfect base to explore the mysterious rugged coastline, rolling hills and historic homes and castles of Ayrshire and the Scottish Southern Uplands. At night, you can experience the true majesty of the galaxy under our Dark Skies, while endangered pipistrelle bats swoop and soar in the skies overhead. If this sounds like your perfect destination, book now to ensure you get your ideal dates at an excellent rate! One of the wonderful things about Tig Cottage is the river that runs through a gorge at the bottom of the garden. If you listen closely at night, the river will sing you to sleep until you're woken by birdsong in the morning. There are steep, unguarded steps from the garden that lead partway down the gorge towards the river. These steps are slippery and we do not recommend their use. We strongly advise that children do not venture down them, and adults use them at their own risk. They do not reach the river. We welcome furry friends at Tig Cottage but the garden is not secured and wildlife such as rabbits and birds often visit. There may be plants that are toxic to dogs in the garden - we recommend dogs are kept on a lead or supervised whilst in the garden. This is an older property, in a natural environment, so sometimes non-poisonous creepy-crawly friends get in, sorry! The age of the cottage means that the toilet is downstairs at the back of the cottage; if you need the toilet at night you'll need to go downstairs and through two rooms. Finally, due to it's rural location, Tig Cottage has a septic tank. Please don't put anything down the toilet other than bodily waste (urine, faeces, pee and poop to our English speaking guests!) and toilet roll. Nappies and wet wipes must not go in the toilet. Thank you.
My name is Victoria, and I own Tig Cottage, a beautiful, quirky, remote cottage in glorious Southern Ayrshire. I want to help you have the perfect holiday, so if you are looking for a stay in this wonderful part of the world, get in touch! Although we don’t live nearby, we have people who can help if you run into any difficulties. Please contact us via the Booking dot Com app in the first instance.
Tig Cottage is in a hamlet with around 10 other houses. The nearest shop is the Co-Op in Ballantrae, approximately 3.5 miles away. There are good walks available from the cottage's front door, or you can drive to other nearby trailheads that are listed in the information booklet. The coast at Ballantrae is rugged and wild, but a more traditional "seaside" beach can be found at Girvan, about 20 minutes up the road. The striking Culzean Castle is around 30 minutes away, as is Stranraer and Cairnrayn (for the fast ferry direct to Belfast), and Ayr is around an hour. Edinburgh, Glasgow and Belfast are all day trip destinations. Ballantrae is also home to the Kings Arms, a community owned pub that is a perfect place to have home style meal after a day exploring, as well as the nearest garage for fuel (24 hours with pay at pump). Ayrshire is so glorious that even an unplanned journey can result in finding beautiful villages and scenery to explore, but there's plenty of destinations to set your satnav for if you choose. The natural glories of the National Forest at Galloway are well worth a visit (just over an hour along wonderful roads) with hiking routes, mountain biking routes and the highest summit in Southern Scotland (the Merrick, part of the sinisterly named "Range of the Awful Hand") all waiting to be discovered. Nearby you'll find picture book towns such as Newton Stewart, with it's Art Deco Picturehouse, Wigtown (known as Scotland's Book Town due to all the second hand book shops) and Portpatrick (a picturesque seaside town). Further up into Ayrshire there are National Trust for Scotland properties associated with Robert Burns, but you don't need to know Robbie's poetry to appreciate them! But there's no denying that Culzean - until recently immortalised on Scottish currency - is the big NTfS draw in the area. If you go there, consider buying a membership if you think you might go anywhere else owned by NTfS, as you might save yourself some money.
