Property information

The English writer Iris Cutting and the Tuscan Marquis Antonio Origo, newly married, arrived in La Foce and discovered that a part of an historic farm was for sale and they immediately fell in love with it. It was 1924 and they purchased an area of 1,400 hectares with around twenty farm units. The purchase of the second part of the farm took place in the 1930s when the owner family, the Mielis, was forced to emigrate to Argentina. The recomposition of the two companies, La Foce Castelluccio, led to an area of approximately 3,000 hectares. The works began immediately, with the complete reclamation of the land, woods and rivers, commissioning the Arch. Cecil Pinsent to renovate the old Osteria La Foce as his own home, expand the farm and build the garden from scratch. Following this, the services for the benefit of the sharecroppers were built ( schools, kindergarten, clinic, after-work club and theatre ), again based on Pinsent's design. It was the beginning of the thirties. The school inspector Alessandro Marcucci was given responsibility for the scholastic direction. His main thought, of Montessori inspiration, was not to tire the children inside the classrooms and in fact he proposed large classrooms with large windows to give the children the impression of being outdoors, the lessons had to be interspersed with work in the small field below. Organizing horse-drawn carriages to take the children to the farms, they made them play and start drawing, at lunch time a meal was served, they made them rest on camp beds and after playing and doing snack twas time to go back to their homes ( full time came in 1934 ). During the war the spaces of the nursery and school were opened to the first displaced children who arrived on 1/30/1943 after the bombing of Genoa in November '42 and there were 7 of them, the second group of 6 from Turin on 2/10/43. Subsequently others were added for a total of 23. The Foce schools were closed during the season 72-73.
