You need a ticket to enter the square. Tickets are free, but you have to reserve your ticket a day in advance - I think we did this via WeChat. Security is very tight. Week or more (I was told by my hotel) advance ticket necessary to go there. Security blocks off whole area starting across wide street, sidewalk across road blocked too. Without access ticket one can't get close enough to see anything. Long queues--didn't see any special access for old, handicapped etc--there must be some somewhere but I saw none. The location is perfect, right on Wangfujing Street, close to major attractions like the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square. I really enjoyed the indoor pool, and the staff were friendly and always helpful, especially with directions and local tips.
