Plaza Mayor

The Spanish Inquisition left Plaza Mayor with a bloody history. Once a centre for executions and bullfights, today it’s chic and cosmopolitan. The 400-year-old equestrian statue of King Philip III watches over the restaurants, artisan shops and street artists that occupy the square. Explore the side streets and you'll find speciality calamari sandwich shops.

Starting point for the tour.Beautiful city, people are positive and cheerful. Food is great. Big city that has a rich history and a new modern side. Definitely a city to visit and explore. Football fans also have a reason to come. Two beautiful stadiums, one near the airport (Metropolitan), and the other in the modern part of the city (Bernabéu).

I would recommend visiting Plaza Mayor for its stunning architecture and vibrant atmosphere. It's a perfect spot to enjoy a leisurely stroll, savor delicious tapas at nearby cafes, and soak in the local culture. The square often hosts events and performances, making it a lively hub that captures the essence of Madrid.

All roads lead to Plaza Mayor.

All roads lead to Plaza Mayor. Enjoy the ambience, wander around, take plenty of photos but do not buy anything. Over priced tourist tat. Do not be tempted to wander into any cafe, bar or restaurant - over priced and not the real Spain. Make an effort to go where the locals go and you'll see the difference. Great place, let the free tour guide tell you all about it.

It is an astonishing amazing square. The best, seat outside to enjoy the food, the view and the vibrant place. Es alucinante. Lo mejor es sentarse fuera en las terrazas para disfrutar de la vista de esta bella plaza, la gente pasar y sentir lo vibrante que es este lugar.

The entertainment at the Plaza Mayor and surrounds (individual entertainers) were incredible. Waking up to music at the Plaza - violins, guitar, accordion. Excellent. The flea market was an experience, Calle Cava Baja for the tapas bars and cocktail bars was excellent, the Grad Via for shopping, Mercado de San Miguel for sampling the extraordinary cuisine...

  • Don't go to any of the "eat as much as you can".

Don't go to any of the "eat as much as you can". It was the only tourist trap we encountered. North to Plaza Mayor street you'll find very good and fancy restaurants. South to this street you will find great othentic Spanish and south American restaurants and a little bit further you'll find real othentic and very good chinese restaurants.
