Palace of Holyrood House

Still the official Scottish residence of the British monarch, Holyroodhouse has been a seat of royalty since the 16th century. Today, you can visit the former chambers of Mary, Queen of Scots and hear the tale of her doomed reign. And if you look out her oratory window, you can see the well-preserved ruins of the 12th-century Holyrood Abbey.

This palace at the end of the Royal Mile was the ancestral home of Mary Queen of Scots and many more of her Stuart dynasty. The palace is well worth a visit with it's own audio guide so you can travel at your own pace. Some pictures are allowed; some places it isn't. If you keep your ticket, it is good for return visits for up to a year from the date of ticket purchase.

    The palace is truly beautiful.

The palace is truly beautiful. The audio tour offers the option to choose your preferred language, which I used to guide myself through the castle using the audio device and the accompanying map. The map is both informative and user-friendly. You can take as much time as you like exploring the rooms, the façade, the interior, and the exterior. The staff are unobtrusive during the tour, yet very attentive and helpful. For a memorable keepsake, there’s an opportunity to shop at the palace store, visit the gallery, or treat yourself at the café.

Much better than Edinburgh Castle for someone wanting to feel like you're stepping back in time. Beautifully maintained! Also, we didn't reserve tickets. I recommend not, we walked up.. got in line, got tickets, and were inside in half the time it took for the pre-reserved ticket holders to get through their line.
