Matthias Church

Over 700 years old, this ancient place of worship has seen Budapest’s history develop all around. Its lofty spire shoots up from a cobbled square on Castle Hill, where frescoes adorn interiors and the sun shines down on a roof garnished with a mosaic of Zsolnay ceramic tiles. As you wander round, keep an eye out for King Matthias’ coat of arms, depicting a black raven.

Worth the trip up the hill.

Worth the trip up the hill. Get the 16 bus just by the funicular (we walked from Pest to Buda across the chain bridge) that will take you up to the castle and then church and fisherman’s bastion. The roof is like a mosaic and great views. Disn go in this time so can’t help with that but was impressed with outside!

The exterior is fantastic, but the interior, while lovely, it not relatively spectacular. Painted columns and pretty pictures reminded me of how much the the Christians copied from the amazing Grande Mesquite of Cordoba. Wish I’d visited the free St. Steven’s Cathedral to give you a fair comparison, or simply not paid for St. Matthias entry.
