Hagia Sophia

In 537 AD, Hagia Sophia began life as a church, before becoming an Ottoman mosque in 1453. The largest cathedral in the world for almost a thousand years, this majestic building is considered one of the finest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture. Today, you can explore its vast structure from the inside with a visit to the museum that’s now housed within the walls.

Sadly tourists can only go around the upper level.

Sadly tourists can only go around the upper level. Previously you could get in on the ground floor and experience the wonderful open space of the huge dome above you. It is still possible to see some of the dome and the structure is very interesting but a slight disappointment. However , it is an amazing old structure. Small number of mosaics still visible. Better and more extensive mosaics at the Kariye Camii if mosaics are of interest.

This was the most incredible part of Istanbul.

This was the most incredible part of Istanbul. Again ensure proper attire or you have to pay for covering. The interplay of Christianity and the Muslim faith, and neither chose to desicrate the other. Just be aware that you will only be able to visit the upper section unless you're a practising muslim.

Its a pity that such an UNESCO monument was turned into a Muslim Cami. And it is discrimination that all non Muslims cannot visit the whole area. As a Greek and orthodox I felt very sorry of the destructions of all the inside ( almost). This should be a museum open for all ,independent on their beliefs. Civilization is not looking into beliefs. Should be respected within centuries.

    Oh, what a delight.

Oh, what a delight. I’m an open minded Christian so I appreciate such a wonderful and special place is still in place. You have to admitted if it wasn’t the Muslims it (probably) shared the fate of Acropolis. Is a wonder it does not crumble during times. Really. I was not able to take two straight pictures in a row, such a marvel of architecture is it, patch after patch. Is not the Pantheon, is not Basilica di San Pietro, but is still there. I also have to appreciate they respect the history and prior faith and do not cover part of the old (Christinas) paintings.

The history is stunning and the main room is beautiful as well as the mosaics. However, I was underwhelmed considering they now charge to go in and you cannot go on the main floor (a result of it being turned into a mosque). Also the carpet choice doesn't help with the overall site. I think the other mosques were better. Also, there are LONG queues to buy a ticket and then queues to go in. I would recommend going to the Hagia Sophia experience museum (across the Obelisk) and buy tickets there.

Insanely long lines deterred us, although you can take great shot elsewhere. Whether you are a man or woman, you need to cover up. Ladies with shawl, long sleeves, and down to ankles. Men with pants and at least a t-shirt (no tank tops). Otherwise, no entry.

We stayed at hotel during our trip to Istanbul and were very satisfied. The location is excellent – close to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and other main sights, yet quiet and comfortable. The rooms are clean, cozy and well maintained. Staff are always polite, helpful and ready to assist with any requests, which made our stay even more pleasant. Breakfast was fresh and tasty, a great start to the day. Overall, Palmera Old City offers very good value and creates a welcoming atmosphere for travelers. Highly recommended!

Very Budget Friendly and amazing hotel. Engin was a very nice host and helped guide us about Istanbul, as it was our first time there. Good-sized room and clean bathroom. Everything you can expect for the trip. It's just 6 6-minute walk away from the Topkapi Palace and Hagia Sophia, and very close to public transport. Absolute worth it for the money.

The hotel is perfectly located near all the main sightseeing spots — just a short walk from Hagia Sophia and Sultanahmet. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful, always greeting us with a smile. The rooftop view was absolutely stunning, especially during breakfast and while enjoying tea at sunset — truly unforgettable moments! Thank you so much Ali and Abdallah.

We had a wonderful stay at Ayasofya Hotel in Istanbul. The hotel is in a perfect location just a short walk from major attractions like the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, and the Grand Bazaar, making it very convenient for sightseeing. The staff were extremely friendly and supportive. Although there were some language barriers, they made every effort to assist us even using translators when needed which we really appreciated. The room was comfortable, clean, and well-maintained, and the hotel’s transport arrangements were quick and efficient.

The location was perfect. You could walk your way to Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and the Topkapi Museum. The night receptionist was Dutch which made it way easier for us. The hotel is 24 hours open. The young lad working during the day was very helpful and gave us a lot of information about the city.

The place was just 15 mins walk to Sultanahmet (Hagia Sophia, Sulaymaniye Mosque) and was not in a crowded area. Lots of restaurants along the way to the hotel and they have very helpful and friendly guy named Tanveer that help us to carry our heavy luggage to our room.

The hotel serves good breakfast. You can order various omlets. Seçkin Kaya (food&beverage manager) and his team were great: very helpful and responsive. There are kettle and tea in the room. Location of the hotel is perfect. Walking distance (5-7 min) from Hagia Sophia, Basilica Cisterna, Sultanahmed square, Istanbul Archaeological Museums (recommended), Topkapi Palace, etc.

The room was spacious, the bed comfortable, quite clean for Istanbul. The cleaning lady came during our stay and arranged everything. The location is excellent, right there is Kapali Carsija, 7-8 minutes away. walks. next to the hotel is the Food street, where you can conveniently have breakfast or lunch. It is well connected with other parts of the city. With the T1 tram, we arrived at all destinations quickly. You can walk to Hagia Sophia and Topkapi, 15-20 min. walking.

Blue Mosque & Hagia Sofia are both jaw droppingly stunning inside. Avoid the huge tour group queues & go straight to the top of the line, else you'll wait for hours. I was in (in both places), in 10 minutes without being pushy.
