Sarande was awful.
Sarande was awful. Not the friendly Albanian experience I’d experienced elsewhere. Dirty beach. Covered in cigarette butts, plastic, bottle tops and broken glass. Every shop appears to invent prices for tourists, which far exceeds the prices of other areas in Albanian. Awful party boats moored along the esplanade playing dreadful music. Ksamil is a very beautiful resort with numerous stunning beaches and crystal-clear azure waters. There are plenty of quality restaurants offering delicious food at reasonable prices. The only drawback is that almost all beach spots are paid, meaning you need to pay for sunbeds and umbrellas. The cheapest spots started at around €15 for 2 sunbeds and an umbrella, while more premium locations charged €30 to €40 per set. Luxury cabana-style spots could cost up to €70 per day. Almost everywhere accepted euros, so it was not necessary to exchange money into the local currency. Alternatively, you could pay in euros and receive change in the local currency (Albanian lek). Himarë is the kind of place that captures your heart the moment you arrive. The town is small but full of charm, with a relaxed atmosphere and friendly locals. You’ll find everything you need: beaches, restaurants, little shops, and a touch of authentic Albanian hospitality. The beaches are truly the highlight. From the main Himarë beach along the promenade to the smaller coves near Prinos, the water is crystal clear and inviting. Street parking is free and accessible. For those who love exploring, having a car is a must—nearby treasures like Porto Palermo, Aquarium Beach, and Gjipe (which requires a short but rewarding 2 km hike) are absolutely worth it. Himarë has both the charm of a quiet village and the energy of a seaside town. You’ll enjoy fresh seafood, traditional Greek-Albanian dishes, and the simple pleasure of strolling along the corniche at sunset. It’s not overly touristy yet, which makes it feel authentic and special. The only thing I didn’t like? That our stay was too short! Two nights are not enough for Himarë: it deserves much more time to be discovered and enjoyed. And next time, I won’t leave without trying the famous Greek gyros at one of the local restaurants. Highly recommended to anyone who wants a mix of beautiful beaches, authentic culture, and a peaceful yet lively atmosphere. Drymades beach town is only worth visiting for the beach - which is amazing. Smallpeeble beach with clear clean water. Noting to see og do in the besch area. Only restaurants, minimarkets and beachbars. No shops or small streets. The restaurants are in general overpriced compared to other areas in Albania and the food and service does not follow the high prices. Qeparo is a charming little village with a lovely "shetitore" (promenade) perfect for evening walks along the beach. The village stretches along the coast, offering breathtaking views and crystal-clear waters, though you'll need to walk a few steps to reach the shore. We had no trouble finding a sunbed without reservations, and the food was delicious and fairly priced—highly recommend restaurants Poseidon and Te Stefi! The only downside was the lack of trash bins along the promenade, which left the walking path a bit messy. This is definitely an area that could be improved. The owners seemed to make the effort to provide with help and assistance, despite the lack of quality in the aspects below. For the price you pay in high season which was 45 EUR per night, of course you don't expect luxury, but some basics should be in place: - 1st of all, the photos used in Booking.com were all from the 2nd building they manage, and don't correspond with the room booked at least on 50%. - the power plugs were a hazard to be aware(when you're travelling with a toddler). - the electric stove provided was almost at half meter height, a constant danger for toddlers. - the air con could be put on only by plugging in the plug and it was configured to the coldest temperature, very annoying to deal with it during the night. - hygiene could've improved: closet was dirty on the top, full of dust, the bathroom super-small. - when I asked for a sponge and dishwashing lotion, the owner told me that I was the 1st ever to ask for that. But what truly set this place apart was the hospitality. The owner went above and beyond to ensure our stay was perfect, kind, attentive, and genuinely invested in making our experience memorable. It’s rare to find a place that combines such high standards of service, comfort, and charm. Hotel Amare has become one of my absolute favorite places in Palasë.
