- From US$123 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.7Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 145 reviewsIncredible location on top of the mountain. Nothing but nature. We had a cabin completely off the remaining part of the lodge. We spent the evening on the balcony - just listening the sounds of nature and watching the animals/birds around us. There was NOTHING around us other than woods and animals. Unbelievable experience. Also the hosts Mia and Ranzel were SO SWEET. They equipped us with vegetables from their garden and lights for the night and they were so incredibly friendly. Kitchen was greatly equipped so we could cook a nice meal in the evening. Breakfast was equally amazing with fresh eggs from the ranch and plenty of fresh fruits etc. We deeply regretted that we didn’t stay longer. Highly recommended.Guest review byMiaNetherlands
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 401 reviewsThis place is a gem: a wonderful eco-lodge in the midst of primary rainforest. You can trek straight out of the lodge along several trails, or sit with a coffee watching the hummingbirds. A highlight for us was seeing the resplendent quetzal from the lodge. The food is fantastic, freshly cooked and super healthy. The owner Berdich took us on a walk and pointed out the birds and plants; he is super knowledgeable and passionate about the environment. I can't recommend this place highly enough, it's a gem. We arrived by bus; it's 200m walk from the bus stop.Guest review byCathyUnited Kingdom
- From US$74.58 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 625 reviewsWonderful breakfast; it costs extra but really is delicious. The hosts are super-organized and have plenty of suggestions on what to do and where to eat. I really liked this little area quite a bit and I think this is the best place to stay in town. Exceptional hot water and water pressure. Went to the very nice fancy hot springs, but that requires car transport.Guest review byMiaUnited States
- From US$161 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 510 reviewsWonderful placement of our bungalow, right on the edge of the valley, with beautiful views (when clouds allow). The garden is magnificent and the focus on nature and birds watching (lots of hummingbirds) fitted our expectations! Good food in the restaurant. And the excursion to see the Quetzal was successful!!!!Guest review byRobbyBelgium

Cartago is really a part of the San Jose Central Valley area...
Cartago is really a part of the San Jose Central Valley area and very densely populated, but it is a great gateway to the central mountains and volcanoes. You are close enough to San Jose for day tours but the traffic is horrendous. As soon as you go out of Cartago you will enjoy much less traffic but very windy mountain roads, Just try to avoid this city in the beginning of August when the pilgrimage (Romero) takes place and thousands of people walk to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Angels in Cartago from everywhere in Costa Rica.Guest review byAliceUnited States - 8.0

Great place to stay outside of San Jose if you have a few days. There is a nice diversity of things to see, all in a loop if you want to. A number of national parks for hiking and sights (Tapani and both parts of Irazu Volcano - Crater Sector & Prussia. Note that the two Irazu sectors are over 10 miles apart and very different. Crater is basically just that and $15 plus they don't tell you it's $5 more to park when you get there. The crater is empty of water, and has been for many years, don't believe the photos, they're old. The hiking in Prussia sector was superb! Additionally, the Orosi Mirador is nice (free), the oldest church in Costa Rica (Ruins - Free), crafts, and the Lankaster Gardens were beautiful. Lots of options for food in Orosi itself.Guest review byMark MortimerUnited States - 10

5 mins drive down the road from Escalar Cachi, the local climbing area -- basically an outdoor climbing gym, with potable water, toilets, guides, top ropes on most routes, a swimming pool, and a nearby river too. Also includes a camping area. 25 mins drive from Paraiso, 1 hour from Volcan Irazu and the Prusia sector forest. A bit further from Turrialba, which was closed due to volcanic activity / covid when I visited.Guest review bynickboldtCanada - 8.0

The lodge is right next to the forest with several walking paths to explore for different levels of difficulty. Tres de Junio is also centrally located between San Gerardo and Santa Maria de Dota, thus making it relatively quick a visit to both as well as other National Parks and trekkings (Tapanti, Los Quetzales and Cerro de la Muerte). Plan for at least 3 nights stay.Guest review byLdA_HVItaly - 6.0
The staff was fabulous! The grounds were immaculate.
The staff was fabulous! The grounds were immaculate. Saw some birds in common area. Food delivered to room was pretty good. Hot. What killed us was the room was freezing with no heat or space heater or extra blanket. There was a large very cold bathroom with absolutely no hot water. Wires sticking out of the shower head. No counter or table to place toiletries. Very dark and dank. A small outdoor light fixture with probably 40 watt bulb was way above the tiny sink. No other lighting. No window light. And nowhere comfortable to sit with room. Slat wood bench on front porch and in room. But this location was at better pricing value than a few others we stayed at. Overall, if there had been heat and some warm water I would have doubled my opinion.Guest review byShandyUnited States - 8.0

We did a tour to the cheesemaking farm Herencia, high up on the slope of the volcano. Getting there via Google maps was a bit tedious but on the way back we got better directions - via Santa Cruz and Torito. The tour is a great experience! On the way back we visited the national monument at Guayabo. We also tried to reach the Aquiares waterfall, but this is a bit difficult to find and we did not get there in time, had to turn back. The last stretch is climbing over big boulders along the riverbed.Guest review byStegeman - 10
A peaceful spot in the mountains.
A peaceful spot in the mountains. It’s a working farm with very friendly owners. We went horseback riding in the trails and enjoyed the home cooked meals. The perfect place to get away and relax with a book or a friend or a bottle of wine or all of the above. The last few km of the road on the ride up is unpaved, rocky and uphill — drive slowly and you will get there!Guest review byIoannaCanada - 10

A small, compact, friendly village in a picturesque valley with easy access to a lovely national park (Tapanti) with its own river. It has it's own public pool and hot springs run by a local hotel. Some good restaurant choices available. Easy access to other areas (Paraiso, Cartago, volcanoes)Guest review byElaineUnited Kingdom
