Center of Nuremberg was almost leveled in WW2. The postwar reconstruction of buildings mostly created replacement buildings in a bland style, though the street layout remained. When we got off the train and checked into the hotel we instantly wanted to leave Heidelberg. The area around the train station is dirty and not interesting, but the old town of Heidelberg turned out to be a gouge surprise! It's amazing! We couldn't get over how vibrant of a town it was. Definitely recommend to take the tram for sightseeing. The tram tickets are easily obtainable at the vendor machines at almost every Haltestelle for everyone’s convenience. Hop on and hop off as you please, there is plenty to see. To me, the central city cobblestone streets with the tram passing through reminded me of Bulgarian capital city of Sofia very much. It is a picturesque city with a unique experience, somewhat allowing an impression of how life was in the medieval ages. Also the surrounding area is great for walks. It is very interesting to explore this city and dive into medieval history in the medieval crime and justice museum (which I would highly recommend, to get the right primer to the Rothenburg experience. Just be aware that there are very, very many tourists. This also means you might want to pick your restaurants carefully... There are very nice restaurants, but some might just look nice and offer just mediocre meals - as expected for tourist magnets. Overall I was positively surprised that such a gem still exists. This is Mecca for Wagner fans in July and August. The acoustics of the Festspielhaus are superb and unique--no other place achieves that blend of voice and orchestra. If you have business in Mannheim, I would recommend not staying in Ludwigshafen am Rhein. Sure they are only separated by the Rhein river but things could have been much easier in my case if I had found property in Mannheim.
