This is the capital of the Saarland area, so has all the amenities of a big town. It has a mainline railway station, and "big town" shops. The centre is pedestrianised, and the old town area of the town is very attractive, with lots of cafes and bars. Around the wider area, the museum of the old, and very large steelworks in Voelklingen is very interesting, and so is the Karlsberg brewery in Homburg and the underground caves there. The Saarschleife bend in the river is beautiful, and there is a high pathway from which to get a better view of the spectacular scene. The local town is Mettlach, and it's a small and pretty place. You can visit the Villeroy and Boch museum and factory outlet there, which are also worth a visit! Slightly further up the line is Trier, the oldest town in Germany, and it still has plenty of Roman architecture. It's also in the German Rhineland vineyard area, so well worth a visit! Mettlach is a charming small town in Germany with many good shops. The church is also impressive. There are a lot of very nice hikes easily accessible from there offering tranquility and interesting landscape alongside the river Saar, for example.
