FAQs about hotels in Galicia

Historic and Holy

A region of lush landscapes, countless coves and beautiful beaches, Galicia is the westernmost part of Spain. Long admired, it boasts incredible reminders of its first settlers – the Romans.

Lugo is the world’s only city entirely surrounded by Roman walls, and quite a sight they are. On a rocky promontory in A Coruña, the Tower of Hercules is a working Roman lighthouse. Considered the world’s oldest, it overlooks one of the region’s ‘rias altas’ – coastal inlets flanked by high cliffs.

Sheltered in another inlet is the port of Ferrol, and Viveiro around the coast has a lovely beach nestled below green hills. Another sandy beach protected by zig-zag cliffs is Ribadeo, on the Asturias border.

The most famous Galicia attraction is the capital Santiago de Compostela whose huge cathedral, firmly on the pilgrim route, is Christianity’s 3rd most important. Unsurprisingly, the city has the most 5-star Galicia hotels on Booking.com, though it’s smaller than Vigo which has a replica of the ship that reported America’s discovery.

The castle in nearby Baiona overlooks a beach, and Pontevedra slopes down to the sea. The undulating coastline continues to O Grove, known for beautiful beaches and hot springs. Thermal waters are also in Ourense, near the stunning Sil River Canyon in the hilly interior, home to most small hotels in Galicia.

Having finished my Camino this was the perfect end to my journey. The staff were incredibly kind and helpful. It was a cosy and inviting hotel where every guest was made to feel special. Staying here was a unique experience due to its location and it was magical. I was even blessed with a beautiful sunset and sunrise to make the occasion even more fabulous. Dinner was delicious with an extensive seafood based menu. Breakfast with a seaview was amazing. The following morning two staff members rang several taxi companies to find someone to get me to my onward transport - they were super helpful and it was not an inconvenience. I hope to return again one day.

Every star is deserved. The location is good, across a charming park. We had the view to the park and road, but we heard nothing. The room was big and stylish. The main feature was the jacuzzi in the room, separated by a glass, which could be covered for privacy. The coffee was on the house. The bed was huge and comfortable. They provided even house shoes and wardrobe. I had the best sleep on my camino.

Beautiful apartment by the sea near A Coruña. Clean, comfortable bed, good shower, big wardrobe. Lovely sea view, amazing sunsets and lovely coastal path nearby. We ordered some breakfast one morning and it had everything you wanted. From coffee, to fresh orange juice, pastries, etc. The staff is very attentive and always reachable. We would highly recommend this place.

Santiago was the Emerald City at the end of my adventure on the Yellow Brick Road of the Camino de Santiago! There was such a wonderful community of people (pilgrims and tourists), music, many, many restaurants and so many shops. Santiago was easy to navigate although there are lots of tiny twisty roads and ups and down hills. And the cathedral is breathtaking!

Bus transport in this town we struggled with, so we ended up hiring a car. Trains are very good. We definitely stayed too long, there is not a lot to do here. The beaches we did get to see were lovely, wished we stayed near a beach rather than town.

Pretty city with lovely river walks and the old town was gorgeous. Beautiful churches and basilicas which were free to visit. The restaurants were excellent and a wide range of cuisines. It was a bit hectic driving around town and parking on the street was difficult. However, there were many inexpensive carparks available. The people were friendly and learning a little Spanish before visiting this region, will go a long way.

A Coruna was perfect for a 4 night holiday. We enjoyed exploring the town and coast by foot from our appartment on 2 days. On our third day we took the train to Santiago de Compostela for a very worthwhile day-trip. The cathedral there is stunning. There were plenty of bars and restaurants within easy walking distance from our appartment.

I was pleased with my time in Arzua. I was tired. It was a long hard walk with a 40 lb pack on my back, so reaching Arzua and having a clean comfortable bed with a private bathroom and the promise of a hearty breakfast the next morning was a bonus. Also I learned that I could have someone courier my back pack to my next destination was a very welcome piece of news.

The lodging is very new and quite easy to stay in. The beds were comfortable, it was a safe area. The kitchen was decent, the air conditioning worked well (important during this stay as it was hot in CdR). It seemed to be quiet so getting a good nights rest was easy. There are dining amenities very close and there is also a produce market if you are inclined to make your own food! The wifi was a little dodgy at times. We used the washing machine and the clothes drying rack which made our stay there very productive.

We just spent one night in Padron and were fortunate to be there during the Pascua de Padron. Aside from the must-see sights, we were also able to immerse ourselves with the Padron townsfolk during the festive celebration of the Pascua de Padron. Must see sights are the Convento del Carmen which will give one a good hilltop view of Padron. Should also visit the Iglesia de Santiago where you will find the "Pedron" or mooring stone, believed to be stone where the boat carrying the remains of St James (Santiago) was tied to.

O Pedrouzo is a small town on the way to El Camino De Compostela. We only needed to stay one night and that was enough. I'm not sure if there were much to do in town. We tried two restaurants El Bule and Galaicos that serve traditional Galician food. Prices were fair and food was good.

It was amazing to arrive in Portomarin and dip my feet in the river. It was the best foot spa experience I have ever had. Great spot to rest when walking the Camino from Sarria. There was a couple of people singing and playing a guitar under a bridge and that made the whole experience even more romantic.
