Vantaa was a good place to stay out of Helsinki with much reasonable prices. The aviation museum is a must see and spent half a day there. Go south to see the magnificent sea, there is a magnificent 20 km Rantaraitti road by the sea. You can walk, run and cycle there. The road is illuminated and really safe to move around, because the richest residents of Finland live next to the road. For example, the directors of listed companies with their families and residents of embassies. I have also lived there myself. I visited this town many times and I find nothing new. The radio-communication museum is excellent. A short distance from this museum there is a little lake. If the weather is hot a bathing/swimming there is the right activity. (and after that, the cakes!) From Patria there is a short walk to the Museum and my favorite mini lake. Hameenlinna has some excellent museums, including Hame Castle, The Prison, and Sibelius's birthplace (small but important), but always check their opening times; we wanted to visit the Palanderin Talo (a house-museum that would have given us insights into 19th century Finnish life) but it closed at 1600 hours on a Saturday! Aulanko is a pleasant park a few kilometres north of the city. We had our best meal during this trip to Finland at the Piparkakkutalo restaurant, with its lovely ambience, delicious food and charming staff. I generally know and like Lappeenranta - it is a nice town to stay in and to both work and enjoy. Located in the beautiful Finnish nature and at the coas of Saimaa lake.
