FAQs about hotels in Opal Coast
The Land of Lights, Cliffs and Dunes
Named by the painter Edouard Leveque after its unique light quality, the Opal Coast (or Côte d'Opale) is part of the Pas-de-Calais department in northern France. Its stunning cliffs, sandy dunes and significant history make this region a place of great interest for tourists around the world.
The Opal Coast offers a ranquil atmosphere and truly magnificent landscapes: from wide, sandy beaches to steep cliffs reminding you of the famous cliffs of Dover, just on the other side of the English Channel. Cape Blanc Nez and Cape Griz Nez are among the most famous resorts; from the latter you can admire the never-ending stream of ships and tankers.
This popular seaside holiday destination has played its part in 20th-century history, being a place were a few battles of both world wars were fought, the most famous being at Dunkirk. It was also part of an Allied plan aiming at deceiving the Germans regarding the location of the invasion of Europe.
While on the Opal Coast, why not visit Calais, the major ferry port of northern France and, for many tourists, a starting point of their French adventure. Another popular destination is Boulogne-sur-Mer, France’s largest fishing port with a historical 12th-century belfry.
Whether you want to enjoy golfing, hiking or sightseeing, Booking.com has a perfect Opal Coast hotel for your trip.

It’s good to spend a night there before getting a ferry back to the UK. Plenty of restaurants open, even on a Monday night. It makes for an interesting little walking tour looking at the parks, buildings and shops.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We stopped in Dunkirk as wanted to do something different en route to UK. The Dunkirk 1940 museum was recommended and this is why we went. The museum was very interesting and brought the reality of Operation Dynamo home to us more so than watching the movie. We also walked around the town which had an eclectic mix of architecture from all the rebuilding over the years.Guest review byJanieSwitzerland - 10

We love Boulogne old town, a quiet little haven away from the busy main town. The main town has an abundance of shops and facilities with pretty much every supermarket you can think of and an incredibly useful Decathlon superstore.Guest review byGrahamUnited Kingdom - 10

The town is lovely, full of gorgeous restaurants and shops and bakeries that are world class. I can highly recommend Manufacture for great home baked biscuits, as well as JoJo's Dough for incredible donuts and more. The beach is soft and sandy with lots of water sports to choose from. There is something for all ages, with a stunning carousel which you to have need cash for. We have now been here twice and we plan to come again with the kids for a nice weekend break. We stayed at the Holiday Inn in Le Touquet which was extremely lovely with a fabulous indoor pool, comfy rooms and very friendly staff.Guest review byMandyUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Berck is the French equivalent of Great Yarmouth, a great big beach, stuff to do and loads of beachfront flip flop shops. Le Touquet down the road is much posher but Berk was friendly and very welcoming to families.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 10

A bustling town with independent shops, cafés and restaurants. A wide esplanade and a very safe beach make it ideal for families. The people are friendly and will help if your French is not up to askinng questions. Very busy on a Sunday so if you want lunch go in early. Parking can be an issue, it's pay parking but not expensive and free between 12:00 and 2:00 There is a one way system which you soon get used to.Guest review bySueUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Nice stop over, 40 mins from Calais, en route for the south.
Nice stop over, 40 mins from Calais, en route for the south. We arrived on a late Sunday afternoon in August. It was easy to get to and small and quiet enough to get a taste of French life without feeling we'd missed too much. We wandered the streets, admiring the architecture, visited the museum as it was closing, stopped for a drink in a bar and shopped for basic ingredients at a local store. It felt safe. Perfect for a stop over. After leaving Saint Omer we drove south and stopped in Nemours for lunch, picking up picnic items from the supermarket and parking up in a big carpark on a very attractive part of the river. Would recommend as an alterrnative to the services.Guest review byRachaelUnited Kingdom - 10

We have visited Wissant many times before for days out and decided to stay in Hotel Normandy for this trip. The hotel is friendly and traditionally French which we liked, we ate breakfast and dinner in the hotel and especially enjoyed the set menu at dinner. The hotel is just a short walk to the beach and convenient for nearby bars and restaurants, it has an outside bar and terrace. Market day is Thursday in Wissant and is worth a look. Wissant is not a traditional destination for British tourists, but it’s one of our favourite places as it’s less commerciallised than many more towns along the Opal Coast.Guest review byKarenUnited Kingdom - 10

Montreuil is a historic, walled town with a large central square and picturesque cobbled streets. The walk around the walls is well worth the time, and wandering the streets is very rewarding. It's a proper local small town, busy with real life, there are many little restaurants and cafes, shops and fascinating old and new French architecture. It's a place where tourists fit in with locals.Guest review bySarahUnited Kingdom
