The Picturesque Land of Lavender and Pastis
With lavender meadows and limestone soils covered with garrigue, the beautiful Provence smells of herbs, flowers and warm mistral winds. This vast French region spreads along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea from the wetlands of Camarque to the peaks of the Maritime Alps.
Famous for its cuisine, picturesque villages and the weather, Provence is one of France’s most popular holiday destinations. People come here to relax under the stunning blue skies and enjoy a slower life pace over a glass of pastis or local wine.
But don’t be mistaken, Provence is as much about the bustling cities as it is about its quiet countryside. Make sure you pay a visit the 2nd largest French city, Marseille, the forever glamorous Cannes or the popular resort of Nice. All of them offer plenty of sightseeing attractions, cultural events and fine dining venues.
For a breath of art and history, stop in Arles, a town full of Roman remains and Van Gogh’s famous artistic inspiration, or Avignon, best known for the stunning Gothic Palace of the Popes - the seat for Western Christianity during the 14th century.
From blue sea to rocky mountains, Provence has something for everyone’s taste. So does Booking.com: over 2000 properties in the region, from hotels with pools to cosy bed & breakfasts for your perfect Provence holiday.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 97 reviewsAn exceptional hotel, situated in its own vineyard. The location is fabulous, the food as very good and the wine of course is from their own production. Our stay included a complementary wine tasting in the vineyard shop (across the road). The Manager went out of her way to ensure all food requests were met. The gardens are beautiful and well kept, and there is a swimming pool for guests. The water was a little warmer than my taste, but I am sure most guests will like it that way. We stayed for four nightsGuest review byJulianUnited Kingdom

We liked the hop on hop off bus though we couldn’t get the audio to work on our phones. The MuCee is great with excellent exhibitions and a sunset cruise on a sailing boat was lovely especially if you are young and happy to swim. But it was also good for an old couple. Like us. Like a lot of French towns, it is difficult to get a sandwich type lunch and also dinner in the evening as lots of restaurants closed in the evening. There is a lot of public transport - metro, buses, trams and you can tap with your card for ticketspGuest review byChrisUnited Kingdom - 10

We loved the old city of Avignon, especially The Palais du Papes and the Pont d’Avignon. Great for walking around as well-illuminated at night. Only drawback was number of tours with large groups of people milling around and blocking corridors in the Palais.Guest review byMarionUnited Kingdom - 10
Aix-en-Provence is a delightful city.
Aix-en-Provence is a delightful city. It is the birthplace of the painter, Cézanne and there are museums devoted to or include his art. There is a very beautiful boulevard called Cours Mirabeau which is very wide and has many fountains. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there is a huge market there. We ate at one of the restaurants with outdoor seating. This city is well worth the visit!Guest review byEstherCanada - 10

Unfortunately, we only had two nights in our itinerary for Arles. It is a charming and elegant city that really deserves a few more days to explore, relax, and enjoy. The people were very kind and welcoming. Unfortunately, the National Archeological Museum was closed for renovations, so I hope to return to Arles when it reopens.Guest review byScottUnited States - 4.0
We Didn’t like Toulon. Large, busy place.
We Didn’t like Toulon. Large, busy place. The main town wasn’t nice and not somewhere I would want to walk around. Beaches were very average - dusty shingle rather than sand. I wouldn’t return or recommend. We included the visit in a stopover.Guest review bySarahUnited Kingdom - 10
It was crowded.
It was crowded. It was market day and there was a Porsche event with about 800 cars m/l. The town knows how to handle a large event. We got lost but John rescued us. The police are not very helpful or friendly.Guest review byJoelUnited States - 10

A lovely location with a great friendly atmosphere. A boat trip to see the Callanques is recommended. Taxis for short journeys eg to the railway station are difficult to find so the bus is your best option.Guest review byCareyUnited Kingdom - 10

Hyeres is beautiful like with a touch of Saint Tropez but way more peaceful. The people are nice and kind-very helpful. There are so many beach to chooce from. The transfortation is efficient enough. My favorite spot is the Port Saint Pierre- where you can dine by the port. I stayed in Ibis Budget hotel which is very close to the city center. Also the weather is nice.Guest review byMarvinPhilippines - 8.0

Enjoyed swimming, walking along the sea front and the ports and having coffee overlooking the sea front. Didn’t really see the uphill historic part, which I regret. The Tourist office at Saint Raphael was helpful as I needed a bus timetable. I’d say you need to be reasonably fit ( or have a car) to stay in the area I was in as in fact buses were few and far between so I did a lot of walking. I was on an Interrail pass so also enjoyed a little side trip out to Nice, which has good and frequent rail links with Saint Raphael.Guest review bySusanUnited Kingdom - 10

I drove down from the Marne valley and this was as far as I wanted to drive in one day! Orange is a delightful little town with Roman theatre the main attraction, but I used it as a base to visit Mont Ventoux (Tom Simpson memorial), Avignon, Arles, Camargue and Pont du Gard - all easily reached by car. Quieter than the main Provence towns but with nice restaurants and cafes so was very happy with it as a base for 3 days. Favourite lunch spot was the Brasserie du Mule du Pape in Chateauneuf du Pape.Guest review byBodosUnited Kingdom
