We stayed 3 nights in the Woodland House Hotel in Dumfries, recommended by friends who live close by. Our friends were wonderful tour guides for us in the area, and actually saw many of the sites we saw for the first time as well. Don't miss Sweatheart Abby, the Tea room next to the Abby had nice tea and scones/lunch, and the Corn Mill just down the road. We also recommend Caerlavrock Castle, John Paul Jones (considered the Father of the US Navy) House and museum, Ruthwell Cross, The twelve apostles stone circle and the Lockerbie Memorial site and Gretna Green (never heard of the very historic and sought after venue known all over the world!) All very fine sites very near Dumfries. 2 full, fun packed days learning great Scotish history and spending wonderful time with friends. An enjoyable time in this beautiful area of Scotland! 💗Guest review byCynthiaUnited States - 8.0

Good base for touring the Galloway Coast, which is spectacular. Stranraer doesn't have a lot of ammenities for tourists, but is interesting for a walk about. Best Guest House ? Neptunes Rest. Family run, spotless, can't do enough for you. AWGuest review byAlexanderUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Moffat is a good location for exploring the town and surrounding area. Plenty of eating places and wee shops to wander the high street. Walks, cycling, golf and fishing near. Playparks for children. Can get bus to Hamilton or Glasgow or head south. train station nearby goes to Edinburgh. Lots of accommodation options.Guest review byElizabethUnited Kingdom - 8.0

We wanted to visit a friend in Moniaive & Gretna Green had the closest accommodation we could find. We saw none of the town as we spent our time with Adam Armstrong Tours touring the gorgeous border country and learning about the Armstrong clan. It is known for being a place where under age English couples in centuries past could more easily get married by the blacksmiths. And indeed weddings were going on. Our B&B host mentioned that the border country is not well-enough promoted. We found the countryside sublime, our fave part of our 3 week trip to very different areas in Scotland.Guest review byArleneCanada - 8.0

Portpatrick is a lovely rugged place with great views, nice walks and a friendly welcome from those we met. Plenty of parking spaces and a very nice hostelry, the Crown hotel, which serves the best food around. I would really recommend staying there if you liked walking , especially the coastal routes and for some peace and quiet. We loved it but it wouldn't be everyone's choice for a break or holiday.Guest review byBarryUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Threave nature reserve is wonderful to walk around and observe wildlife. Gatehouse has great eating and drinking places and the SPAR has everything you might need. Castle Douglas has good food shopping. Moss Yard beach is a must for families and dog walkers. The Raiders Road forest drive is fabulous as it passes the Mare’s Tail , the deer park and Otters falls along the way , a magical drive by the river. A beautiful rural unspoilt area of West Scotland.Guest review bySallyUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Lovely part of Scotland that is greatly overlooked
Lovely part of Scotland that is greatly overlooked Newton Stewart is a great base for exploring the wider area with good cycle path along River Cree down to Wigton. Area is fantastic for cycle touring.Loved the quiet roads on the Machar down to and around Isle of Whitehorn/ Port William, parts of the cycle route to Gatehouse on Fleet and used a car to get to different start points to explore around Kirkcudbright and Dalbeattie, and around Mull of Galloway( northern section especially lovely sea views to Ailsa Craig). Sadly not impressed with parts of Sustrans routes (poorly maintained or shocking surface for road bikes on sections of the signed route thro Cally Palace and to Gatehouse before Creetown, and parts of old Military Road seemed v neglected. We even returned on part of A75 to avoid the worst sections of this route around Stronord!) Great ride from Stranraer to Girvan via New Luce and Barrhill and caught the train back-the train ride alone is an experience to enjoy. We enjoyed days of carefree cycling thanks to some great weather. Really appreciated the efforts to make this part of Scotland cycle friendly and safe. It was good to see others enjoying the same.Guest review byALISONUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Value for money? better than, helpful staff? excellent.
Value for money? better than, helpful staff? excellent. For a hotel in such a busy area with the amount of footfall it receives, it is a very well kept property. It was early March on our visit and to wake up in the morning with a view across the lake it surpassed our expectations. It is easy to recommend the Days Inn at Lockerbie.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom
