FAQs about hotels in Essex
Close to London, Yet Far Removed
Half-timbered houses lining village greens. Picturesque estuaries and sweeping countryside. Traditional seaside resorts. Affluent Essex has all of this and more.
Its county town Chelmsford has a flint cathedral and waterfront shopping complex. To the east Maldon is a pretty estuary town with a colourful high street, and further south is Southend-on-Sea, a popular seaside town with a good helping of fish and chip shops and the world’s longest pier.
Another pier with amusements is in Clacton-on-Sea, the closest Essex seaside resort to Colchester, the former capital of Roman Britain. City walls remain from this period, and it has a Norman castle and first-class zoo.
From nearby Harwich ferries depart to the Netherlands and Denmark, while Braintree houses the Freeport Outlet Shopping Village. Further west is Stansted Airport, an important hub for low-cost airlines. Closer to London, modern Harlow has the most Essex spa hotels and is close to the Lee Valley Regional Park and Epping Forest.
Brentwood is a bustling commuter town from where you can see the City of London skyline on a clear day. Close by is Basildon with its Hollywood-esque sign, and forming a triangle with them is Grays, home of the huge Thurrock Lakeside Shopping Centre.

- From US$97.10 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,770 reviewsWe stayed at Kingscliff hotel for a holiday with 7-month old twins. The family room was cosy, clean and spacious: we had a double bed, two single beds and two cots and we managed to place our rocking chairs and a playmat in between. We appreciated that we were given a room on the ground floor and there was no need for us to carry our babies up and down the stairs. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Each day we needed to warm baby milk and sterilise bottles in a microwave, and all our requests were accommodated promptly. The breakfast and evening meal in the restaurant was always delicious, with wide choice. In the restaurant, we were also provided with convenient high chairs for the babies.Guest review byEllenRussia
- From US$147.49 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.1Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,543 reviewsWe arrived quite late at 7:30pm. The staff member on reception was very friendly and accommodating and advised that we had been upgraded to the newly renovated rooms as they had availability. The rooms were exceptionally clean, comfortable and well provisioned. I have been lucky enough to stay in a couple of fancy hotels, including Hayman Island on the Great Barrier Reef, and the rooms we had at Marks Tey were on a par and better than those hotel rooms. Excellent value for money for our last-minute booking. Menu looked tasty and great value, but we had already eaten so didn't try the food on this occasion.Guest review byCraneAustralia
- From US$199.38 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 157 reviewsAbsolutely everything. My partner and I rented out both the annexes for us and his parents as we were attending a wedding at Gosfield Hall which is only a 3 minute drive. It was lovely that we could open up the adjoing doors between the annexes during the day and then close them off so we all had our privacy at night. The view of the lake was beautiful. The host greeted us kindly and the snack bar across the grass had a great selection of yummy tummy fillers.Guest review byCharlotteUnited Kingdom

It is what it is.
It is what it is. We enjoy staying there for the pool and associated facilities and obviously the location in respect to the airport. If the rates were a little cheaper for parking we might park there as well but.......Guest review byAndyUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Clacton pier was great for children the beach was clean and there was a few toilets locally which was good. Car parking is dotted around that’s free for a couple of hours but paid car parking is expensiveGuest review byMarieUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Chelmsford is a very pretty place .
Chelmsford is a very pretty place . The people are so friendly but unfortunately I cannot walk long distances so I could not get to see it all . But we'll worth a visit. We had breakfast in the Range shop which was quite nice. Plenty of places to eat. ...there is street food also like paella...beautiful arrangements of home made breads The shops are so many you would need a day to see it all. There are a row of markets do there is plenty to see.Guest review byLewis - 8.0

Nice ambient. The rooms were sufficiently equipped. We had a full day party within the hotel halls. Lovely. The hotel surrounding space and town caught my attention best. Took peaceful evening and morning walks. Only thing I missed was a gym.Guest review byOmaUnited Kingdom - 6.0

The Marygreen Manor is a beautiful hotel and I would recommend it, I didn't spend much time in central Brentwood so my opinion wouldn't be helpful to others but it is close to the M25 so very convenient, the Shell petrol garage near Junction 28 M25 is to be avoided at peek times, its just chaos trying to get in or out again, you've been warned!Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - 6.0

Braintree is a very historic town with glimpses of a medieval past in its narrow lanes around the town centre. It has suffered from a decline after its main local industry closed down. It could be a lovely place if there was investment in it because a number of traditional buildings still stand, and it has a good sized centre for an upgrade to take place. There's a nice local park near Coggeshall Road and the station. Sadly, there's an ugly multistorey car park near the run down shopping area with a few cafes and low priced shops. Very sad to see it so neglected. Maybe local councillors could take a look at towns like Ludlow or Chichester to see how they've protected the historic heart of their home towns. Happy to return again though. Good luck Braintree people.Guest review byPaulineUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The position of the Hotel was ideal to get to where we needed to be. The Hotel setting was lovely, over the lake. Also, after being out all day, it was so convenient to just walk over to the Festival leisure park to find somewhere to eat. A very nice and convenient Hotel. Harvesters, and Wagamama were both good choices to eat.Guest review byGeorgeUnited Kingdom - 6.0

Cheap basic accommodation for 5 min drive to airport. Advertised hotel opposite-this doesn’t serve food. Better hotel was Lamb and Lion two blocks away-lovely. Fish and chips -walk around the corner or Kebab van opposite.Guest review byJulieAustralia - 10.0
Lovely town.
Lovely town. You have plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants. We particularly liked the Solero Lounge. Everyone in the shops and eateries was pleasant and friendly. We loved Hythe quay. We booked a trip round the river Blackwater on a Thames Barge. It was a cold morning but we still enjoyed it.Guest review byPhilipUnited Kingdom
