FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

- From US$172.89 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,695 reviewsWe loved the large room with views up Derwent Water and the large outdoor deck next to a garden area ( room no. 40). The furnishings were very comfortable and included a small table and chairs by the view window. The bathroom had floor heating and the shower was a good size , hot water and with great water pressure. The well staffed restaurant is very large and included a separate section for hikers and people with dogs . The breakfasts were nice and the dinner menu had lots of options and prices very reasonable . The restaurant has lovely views across to the lake and mountain backdrop. The proximity ( about two hundred metres) to the Lodore ferry landing was very convenient and provided an opportunity to do a delightful Derwent Water walk by using the ferry to transfer to another location and walking back to the hotel. There is lots of free parking right at the hotel.Guest review byStevo57Australia
- From US$313.42 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,229 reviewsWe loved the rustic romantic room, with large balcony and fireplace. The view of the lake was amazing, the sounds of the stream and the majestic gardens was something out of a movie The spa was so fun, and the soak in the heated pool at sunset was perfectly romantic. Top tip set your alarm an hour before sunrise, get your self up and be in wonder of the perfect night sky. You might just be lucky enough to see a shooting star or 10! 5mims walk to the right and you can start one of the most idelic walks ever.Guest review bysienadeThailand

A lovely place to visit.
A lovely place to visit. Lots of good local shops, cafes and restaurants that were nearby. Buses 599 open top available to get to other places and train station with good connections if you don't want to drive. We enjoyed visiting Ambleside, Bowness, Coniston and Grasmere. We took a boat out on Windermere from Low Woods, the car ferry to Hawkeshead and the boat trip on Lake Coniston. A walk down to the lake directly from Windermere via Birthwaite Road leads you to two small jetties where people were swimming, paddle boarding and people watching. In Windermere, Home Ground Cafe is a great place for breakfast but be prepared to queue. Tillys bar did a good fish and chips. Cafe Italia for pizza etc.Guest review byJulieUnited Kingdom - 10.0

This is the third time I have been back to Bowness this year. I love the art shops, the clothes shops and most importantly the home made fudge. So relaxing watching the boats on the lake and geting the ferry to the other side to walk up to Hill Top. It was a struggle to get my grandaughter away from the Beatrix Potter museum.Guest review bytinaUnited Kingdom - 8.0

It was end of season and the kids are back at school so it was much quieter than in August, however you still need to reserve a table in the good pubs etc for dinner. We ate dinner in the pack horse inn, great menu choices and the food was excellent but most of the tables were reserved in the evening, we got lucky with a walk in. lovely town centre with many craft & outdoor shops, and there is also a Booths supermarket if that's your thing. The chippy in the town centre does good fish and chips but it's expensive.Guest review byStephenUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The central location is a good starting point for exploring the Lake district. It is compact but has a good variety of shops and eating places. One car park was generally full bur a second car park is available with lots of space especially for larger vehicles.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

I know Penrith well, I used to live and work here and its always a pleasure to return. It's a great little town with lots of great places to stay and eat, additionally the Lakes are on the doorstep and the locals are sooooo friendly. Additionally, not being in the National Park makes things a tad cheaper.Guest review byDavidUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Grasmere is like nowhere else - it’s absolutely stunning and has a tranquil feel to it that just makes you feel so relaxed and content when you’re there. Plenty of walks, scenery, cafes, restaurants, a decent pub and lots of beautiful hotels to choose from. The gingerbread shop is gorgeous! There’s so much to see here. I can’t imagine anyone not liking Grasmere! Simply beautiful.Guest review byRachelUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0
