Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the...
Some towns and cities in England are only historic in the sense that a thoughtful (or shamefaced) Council has preserved a few remnants of the past among the concrete, steel and glass of modernity. Winchester however is among the honoured ones where history outweighs the contemporary. It is impossible to miss the past even on the shortest of walks in the city centre - across the road from the newish retail centre are house walls containing Anglo Saxon and Norman stone carvings as an example. Winchester is justly proud of its history from ancient Britons through being a Roman settlement to Alfred setting the capital of his hard won battles for supremacy over the Vikings in Winchester to the later Norman conquest establishing the castle and cathedral and the presence of monarchy right through to the 1800s. Winchester, it has to be said is one of my favourite English cities - I keep returning for the simple reason of its consciousness about its historical focus. It is a city that behaves more like a small countryside market town and long may that image remainGuest review byGraemeUnited Kingdom - 8.0
We stayed in Basingstoke town centre.
We stayed in Basingstoke town centre. It has a nice shopping centre and a good selection of restaurants all in the same vicinity, plus a large pub. We found the service from the bus station very reliable.Guest review byGinaUnited Kingdom - 6.0
Sorry didn't visit Fareham.
Sorry didn't visit Fareham. Did visit Bishops Waltham: a quaint village with lovely high street full of boutiques, proper bakers, a greengrocer and coffee shops, cheap parking. Also has Bishops Place ruins to view!Guest review byJ PUnited Kingdom - 10.0
A delightful high street. Beautiful Georgian buildings
A delightful high street. Beautiful Georgian buildings and individual shops. Among the chain store shops were useful ones ,such as Boots and Superdrug, Picturesque, and leading down to the cobbles and the harbour. Also Lymington is very easy to reach by car , using the M3 and the M27.. This, of course depends on your starting point.Guest review byAnonymous - 4.0
Fir tree lodge room 8 not fit for purpose.
Fir tree lodge room 8 not fit for purpose. Noise heard from neighbouring rooms and bed stuck against wall! Whole hotel is very dated and a bit too business/conference based rather than comfy/cosy country hotel which it should be. Staff very friendly though and breakfast was enjoyable.Guest review byKevinUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Lyndhurst was a pretty town but the traffic was very busy so didn’t stop but it looked a vibrant little town and will explore again one day . We enjoyed the forest and seeing the ponies and donkeys who are in no doubt who’s in charge of the roads but it was wonderful to see . Plenty of places to stop and walk in the forest with some wonderful pubs to dine inn .Guest review byPeter - 8.0

The Aldershot Military Museum is excellent with much information about the area as well as military matters. Also I recommend the FAST Museum, which is full of aeronautical science and aviation history. NB these museums are not open every day.Guest review byCatharineUnited Kingdom - 8.0

The town is very quiet and even on a Saturday seems to be dying on it's feet but there are numerous pubs and several reasonably priced restaurants (we were very happy with Frango's and The Golden Dragon. The Andover Tap is worth a call for real ale drinkers. on the positive side, there were no gangs roaming the streets and we felt very safe, Also, their British Legion(open to visitors) has music on a Saturday night and has been very well refurbished. The staff , members we met and the Secretary Sarah were very welcoming. We'd say that Andover is better used as a good base for travelling round the area.Guest review byGregUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I loved my stay at the Alton House Hotel, as I have never been to Alton before the staff were polite friendly and extremely helpful, I also made two new friends whilst I was there which is truly fantastic. I would recommend this hotel to any one that asked as in my eye's there is no better place or people.Guest review byRobb
