Next, I liked the lobby and lounge areas, which were spacious and pleasant; the room, while a bit antiseptic-looking, turned out to be extremely comfortable and well designed. The excellent mattress, together with the peace and quiet, contributed to a good night's sleep. From my balcony I had a partial view of the sea, which I wasn't expecting. I was pleasantly surprised by the spacious bathroom and by its roomy shower stall, which was equipped with very nice soap and shampoo. The breakfast was delicious, too, with a wide variety of delicious items to choose from, so that you could have a full English breakfast, a Greek breakfast, or a combination of both. I believe it is the most beautiful reception I have ever seen - the ocean as a backdrop is just picture perfect. The lobby smelled amazing and we were welcomed in the most hospitable manner. The service was outstanding - it was more than the usual friendly and polite service, everyone made us feel welcome and well taken care of. They service we experienced was true hospitality with heart. The breakfast had the most amazing selection. The views all around the resort are incredible - starting from the lobby, to the room, to the pool, we loved that you could see the ocean from almost every angle. Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic.
Heraklion has a lot of car and bike traffic. It is like peak hour in Sydney constantly. Parking is horrendous. I would recommend staying out of Heraklion. Drive to Knossos Palace, but go early. The other attraction for us was the Archaeological Museum. Get a uber or taxi to that. The foreshore looks like they gave up on it years ago. It was about a ten minutes walk uphill part way to Koutouloufari, loads of restaurants and bars, a fabulous experience. Walk a little further and you come to Piscopiano, also excellent. Difficult to judge because we came early in the season when there was a cold wind blowing and not all the places were open. However, there didn't seem to be many places to eat [not a problem for us as there was one excellent place, though would be a problem peak season] . The hotel complex is well laid out.
The hotel complex is well laid out. Although set in a hill there are plenty of lifts if you don't like using stairs. The rooms are spacious and cleaned daily. Bathrooms are modern and clean. It's a great place to just relax by the pool by the bar or on your balcony. It's north facing so full sun in the morning. There is a good gym and a beauty spa. The evening entertainment is varied and of a good standard. A lot of the shows are held in an open air ampitheatre ideal for a summers evening. There is a regular bus run by the hotel down to the local beach which is helpful as the road down is steep and narrow. The restaurant is excellent. The choice and quality of food is outstanding and delicious. The staff are helpful and always have a smile on their faces. Of course if you are looking for the crystal clear water, Matala is not the one, even though the surronding landscape is something beautiful. Nights in Matala can't be boring. A quiet area, but the beach close by is not the best (still ok if you wanna just refresh a bit) and you need the car if you want to see and explore more (even in the surroundings). There are buses, though, to move to/from major points of interest. The location I chose (Kri-Kri Village) was perfect and I had the best time! Lovely resort with loads of different bars, restaurants and tavernas to suit everyone. Not rowdy or loud. Beaches are good with some places offering free sunbeds. Plenty of different hotels to choose from. A trip up the mountain to Mochos is recommended on a Wednesday night for Greek night. It’s in a square surrounded by tavernas for all to enjoy the entertainment. It’s recommended you get someone to book a table in one of the tavernas as it’s very busy. The beach has some organized areas with sunbeds, but it gets very busy during the summer peak season, particularly on Sundays when many locals also head to the beaches.
