Indonesia's Laid-back Lombok
A great alternative to busy Bali is lazy Lombok, a more authentic representation for tourists who wish to explore one of Indonesia’s more than 17,000 islands. It is separated from its naughty neighbor by the Lombok Strait to the east and from Sumbawa by the Alas Strait to the west.
Lombok is a typical island paradise of paddy fields, pristine beaches, jungle escapes and mountain retreats. It is largely inhabited by the local Sasak people with a small percentage of Balinese settlers.
Many hotels on Booking.com are centred around the capital of Mataram and the beaches stretching along the north-eastern coastline, including the sweeping bays of Senggigi. Medana Bay is another great northern location for people wanting to visit the nearby Gili Islands, a wonderful snorkeling location and nightlife choice.
Escape the tropical heat in the mountains surrounding Gunung Rinjani, an active volcano where tourists can break in their newly acquired trekking shoes. Other adventures abound on the southern surf beaches of Lombok.
Lombok International Airport is located 33 km south-west from Mataram and services daily flights mainly from Jakarta and Bali. This round-shaped island is approximately 80 km in both directions and offers plenty of variety for a great holiday.

A bustling town with much to explore and many bars and restaurants to choose from. When we come again (and we will) we would like to do more trips exploring the outlying areas. Our main purpose for travel was to attend a wedding at Selong Selo resort (also fabulous with spectacular views) so we didn't do much exploring this time. It was sad to see so much plastic rubbish on roadsides. The infrastructure, at the moment, does not deal with this but efforts are being made.Guest review byAngela - 10

Gili Air is such a special island. Small, peaceful, and full of good vibes. You can walk everywhere, enjoy sunsets by the beach, and feel like time slows down. One of the highlights for us is Sunny Rose Bungalows and Restaurant. The food there is honestly amazing — fresh, tasty, and beautifully presented. The staff is super friendly and always smiling, which makes you feel at home right away. Whether you go for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, it’s always a good experience. We had a fantastic stay at Gili Meno Mojo Beach Resort.
We had a fantastic stay at Gili Meno Mojo Beach Resort. Our room (Deluxe Beach Front) was well equipped with tea/coffee making facility, drinking water and very efficient air con and a TV. The bed was super comfy and we both had the best nights sleep we’ve had in ages. We could step out of our room onto the beach and the snorkelling (straight off the beach) was amazing, with the greatest diversity of fish species that we’ve ever seen. We could sit in the restaurant area watching turtles poke their heads up through the water whilst enjoying the complimentary afternoon tea. Chriest was so helpful, making sure everything was OK, giving us lots of information about Indonesian life and sorting out our onward travel. Jo and Linjang were also super friendly with always time for a chat. The chef cooked delicious meals……I particularly enjoyed the grilled mahi mahi fish and my husband loved the red fish curry and the breakfasts were lovely but there were other restaurants close by if you chose to eat somewhere else. The local family who manage Green Haven Homestay are so welcoming and friendly. They will do almost anything to cater for travellers, for example I am 68 and wouldn’t have been able to do the 6 km walking tour up and down hills and uneven surfaces so they organised a motorbike tour which was great. The tour of the villages was also good and very interesting and informative to see the local market, pottery being made, textile weaving and bamboo weaving. There was a good variety of food and the family dinner was wonderful, so much delicious local food. The accommodation was suitable in a peaceful environment. Selong belanak is a charming location with friendly locals and great food! Main beach Munah is buzzing with people holidaying and learning to surf With Warungs along the beach you can grab a board or a cold Bintang and enjoy the water Homestays are the way to go but there are also Also beachfront restaurants and resort style places. Was exhausted after Mt. Rinjani climb and this impacted on my exploration of the wider area, which I would've liked to have done more of. Also despite being officially the 'dry season', the weather was often overcast and rainy. I think had things been slightly different and I had had more time, the experience would have been better.. Sekotong is not overurn with tourists and all the associated businesses that come with that. Hence it's very quiet for the most. The down side of this is that you always need transport if you want to get to any other facilities or shops, whether that be a car and driver or a motor scooter. Sekotong is also close to the more south western Gilis, which makes for a very quiet visit for snorkelling etc. This is not a party town type of place - so if that's what you are seeking, better go to the more established areas.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10
