- From US$162.56 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 935 reviewsOne of the best places we have ever stayed in in Italy. Palazzo Alexander is a beautiful and very friendly place with attention to detail. You could feel that this hotel is family owned. From the moment we entered the door we were met by a both friendly and professional atmosphere. We felt so welcome and cared for all through our four nights stay. Our room was spacious and - very important as Lucca was going through a cold snap - properly insulated and heated; this can sometimes be an issue in hotels in Italy, but not here. The included breakfast was sumptious: Besides a well equipped buffet they brought us freshly cooked eggs and bacon, freshly squeezed orange juice and coffee and a selection of local cold cuts straight from the kitchen to our table. One night as we were on our way out for dinner the rain was belting down and we didn't have an umbrella (forget it in Pisa); the friendly receptionist just lent us his - thank you!Guest review byAndersDenmark
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 535 reviewsAmazing room with balcony and view over the vineyards. Lovely large shower. The added touch of having your breakfast delivered to your room was great. The pool was cold but the area was comfortable with space for guests to allow them to spread out. The wine tour and tasting was fabulous and only a short walk and Alice was a great host. The wine was of great quality and we bought several cases and if you stay at the hotel you receive a discount voucher for wine purchases.the restaurant had beautiful food and was a reasonable price for what we ate. The steak was cooked perfectly. We can’t wait to return.Guest review byLeanneSwitzerland
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.6Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 545 reviewsThe staff was simply amazing! She made our stay an experience that will last for a lifetime, with her positivity and service minded approach... Simply stunning! The hotel in itself was beautiful decorated and clean and tidy. The bathtub as well as showers were fantastic, with lots of hot water (that was quickly heated up). Breakfast was great! The flexibility at the location made it very easy for us. And the close distance to the city centre gave us the opportunity for to experience the city at evening without being afraid of having to wait for taxi :-)Guest review byHansNorway

We spent 6 nights there.
We spent 6 nights there. We are big walkers and walked everyday. Did the bike ride to Pisi one day. That was great. Consider fewer days if you are not interested in walking so much. If you have a car, you can easily get to other locations for day trips. The train station is an 8 min walk from lodging and you can also do day trips from Lucca this way. Lots of shopping and sightseeing available in Lucca. Check Lucca city calendar as they do have large sponsored events like the Comic and Games festival in early Nov (150,000+ people attend) and a month long music festival in July. It would be over run with too many folks to enjoy the peacefullness of Lucca! Plus books out a year in advance for these festivals.Guest review byCristinaUnited States - 10

The great thing about Altopascio is that it is close enough to be able to do many day trips. Within an hour from Altopascio you can get to Cinque Terre (La Spezia specifically), you can go to Pisa, Florence and even San Gimignano, a beautiful borgo townGuest review byRogerCanada - 10

Gorgeous hilltop village with great restaurants and a castle that you can visit with amazing views. We loved the fact that it wasn't too touristy and our trip coincided with the annual wine festival with lots of stalls and live music which we enjoyed.Guest review byEmmaUnited Kingdom - 10

Lucca is beautiful, super architecture, a very old walled town full of interest. Good restaurants and bars, lovely squares and piazzas, always something to explore around every corner. A good location to chill out, enjoy a bit of Tuscan culture and cuisine. Also with good transport links to Pisa, Via Reggio, Florence and more, but beware the strike culture - it can be expensive and taxi's can take advantage!Guest review byIainUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Very peaceful to look at the mountains while enjoying your morning coffee. Leave more time for communting to the property every day from where ever you visit, it is a small, winding road, a tunnell and not fun to do at night or after a glass of wine. I will look to stay closer to Pisa next time.Guest review byKristenUnited States - 8.0

It was quite special to stay in an ancient fortification stemming from the 1400's. The heir to this property gave us good historic background on the property. The unit is reasonable in size and was a comfortable size for 4 people although we were 6. The sleeper couch was not comfortable. The kitchen was very nice but it was not equipped to the standard of a true self catering unit. For the rest everything was just fine and we would advise anybody to come and stay here when visiting the area. The main bedroom bed was nice. The 2nd bedroom only had half walls. The little town is quaint and beautiful and worthwhile visitingGuest review byM GSouth Africa - 10
Beautiful home base city for exploring Tuscany.
Beautiful home base city for exploring Tuscany. Easy day trip options via bus or train -- or car rental options. Not too far from anywhere! We loved sitting in piazzas and people watching - Piazza S. Michele was probably our favorite -- or the one near the Puccini statue. Other spaces were a bit obscured due to tents being set up for the end of the month Comic Con convention -- so check the events calendar if planning a trip -- it may be something you want to avoid as it brings. in 300-500 thousand extra people!!Guest review byEileenUnited States - 8.0

Montecarlo is an excellent village on a hilltop close to Lucca. The village is very lively in the evening, with many restaurants and bars. Unfortunately, like in many other locations where demand exceeds supply, we had some negative experiences with restaurant owners who were rude and not flexible with tourists. Fortunately, those were a few exceptions, while most restaurants were friendly and gentle.Guest review byRiccardoItaly
