Hilltop Towns Ringing with Music
One of Italy’s smallest regions, fabulous Umbria has stunning hilltop towns, rolling vineyards and magnificent architecture to rival its more famous neighbour Tuscany.
The capital Perugia is a university town whose cobbled centre houses medieval art, steep streets and shops selling locally made chocolate. It also hosts a jazz festival, while the annual Festival of the Two Worlds is in Spoleto, a town with a hilltop castle and well-preserved Roman theatre.
Remains of a Roman theatre are also in walled Gubbio, one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval towns. North-east, Città di Castello has excellent galleries and a church visible for miles around. The same is true of the Basilica of St Francis in Assisi, dedicated to the saint who lived in poverty. Ironically, this hillside town has one of the few 5-star Umbria hotels.
Foligno has a peaceful river and further south Terni is near the multi-level Marmore waterfalls. Orvieto on a sheer escarpment to the north-west houses the jewel in the Umbrian crown – a fantastic cathedral with a gold-mosaic façade.
To the north, jutting into Lake Trasimeno on a piece of land that was once an island, is Castiglione del Lago. In the east, tranquil Norcia in the foothills of the Monti Sibillini National Park houses some of the many Umbria hotels in the countryside on Booking.com.

- Scored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,105 reviewsDomus Pacis Assisi is very well located near the train station and it is very convenient for travelling by trains. It is upgraded and very, very clean. For those who cannot eat suggary breakfast, there is a possibility with toasts and cheese which is more than expected in majority of places in Italy. Air condition is perfect, not too cold, not too warm and without a windy air. Perfect for 38 degree in the summer 2024!!! I recommend it for All.Guest review byJolantaPoland
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 1,019 reviewsWhere could I start, we happened to book Nikis by chance as it had a great view and a pool. We really lucked out! The team were super accommodating, arranging anything we needed. The food was exceptional and the view was spectacular! Comfy beds, great wine, great people and dog friendly too! We were so impressed with the whole experience we have now decided to hold our wedding at Nikis next year!Guest review byEsme StewartColombia

Really central location, everything is in reach by foot. Good design, a quiet place for a relaxing stay.Guest review byAlfredAustria

I went to Assisi to visit the tomb of Saint Carlo Acutis and it was such an emotional experience! I had no idea there were so many hills in Assisi. I would have packed much differently and had a much smaller suitcase. The people that I met were very friendly and helpful to me. My suitcases were entirely too heavy and so many people provided me with assistance!Guest review byJudithUnited States - 10.0

The city is wonderful but you will need a car to get around some of the sattelite towns such as Montefalco or Todi. Other towns like Assisi and Foligno are accessable by train. You will need to pre book wine tours out of town.Guest review bySteveNew Zealand - 10.0

A beautiful village that reflects Tuscany well and has beautiful views from the various viewpoints. We went in September and although there were other visitors, there was no congestion that would interfere with enjoying the trip.Guest review bynirIsrael - 10.0

It’s a fantastic place to visit! So much to see! I went back up to the Casa Romana and the Teatro Romano and both were well worth the visit. La Rocca has incredible views and a very interesting museum. Then you can go down to the aqueduct, which is stunning.Guest review byAnneUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The quintessential Italian village -- so much history with beautiful cobblestone streets, amazing cafes and quaint shops. We were there for a family baptism and every venue accommodated our large groups with advance planning. Completely gracious and wonderful -- I will definitely return. It's a hidden gem.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0
Terni is a wonderful city.
Terni is a wonderful city. In my opinion it's a hidden gem of Italy. It's an easy 1-hour train ride from Rome, and on the way to all the northern Italian cities. Terni Centro has almost no cars, so incredibly walking friendly, full of cafes, gelaterias, and pizza. All, with picture book old Italian architecture. Also, Terni really comes alive after 4pm!Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

Passignano sul Trasimeno is a charming lakeside town in Umbria offering breathtaking views, authentic Italian culture, and a peaceful atmosphere away from tourist crowds. With its medieval fortress, waterfront promenade, excellent local cuisine, and perfect location for exploring the Umbrian countryside, it's an ideal destination for travelers seeking a genuine Italian experience and great tradition like Palio Delle Barche.Guest review byGrzegorzPoland - 10.0
We stayed one night.
We stayed one night. Julia, the hostess, was outstandingly helpful and she spoke very good English. The dinner and breakfast were particularly good. We ate dinner outdoors but in good shade from the evening sun. There is a large swimming pool which has a superb view. I highly recommend Romitorio agriturismo.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists.
Small and not overrun with lots of foreign tourists. Station very convenient so easy to use as a base to visit Asissi, Spoleto and Perugia, yet plenty to see in Spello. A delightful little hill town. Hard walking up hill but downhill all the way home if accommodation was at the bottom end of the walled city.Guest review byBethAustralia
