Our rooms were like a time portal and the hotel is a grand old building with real character. Staff are friendly and informed, although you may struggle to convey some things if not speaking Japanese. Each room had a solid welcome kit. There are 3 lovely and clean onsen - the best one is reserved for men in the mornings and women in the evenings. If you like full tatami mat rooms, putting out your own futons to your own desired spot and thickness, not being disturbed in your room, and having a cute walk to the train station down a picturesque valley, this is the spot for you. It was beautiful, windswept, cold and peaceful in the valley, with the cutest train and some lovely mountains to climb right outside. It's rare to find a property with this much history and authenticity on a booking site like this and with so many minute adjustments to suit a more modern / western crowd who appreciate Japanese tradition. As a group we struggled with the sukiyaki dinner on the first night, and while other guests were served that menu on our second night we were given a different menu with modifications based on what we probably enjoyed from the first dinner. This was thoughtful and happened without us asking, and the dining room staff deserve real commendation for their efforts. We chose outer Tokyo for our two stays at the start and end of our trip. It kept us away from crowds and into lively, friendly neighbourhoods. We probably travelled 30 minutes to get into central Tokyo each time, but we also chose to travel to sights in the outer Tokyo areas. We ate locally and were welcomed by locals. TIPS: 1. Couples, take both an Android and iPhone if possible. 2. Google Translate is essential for reading menus and ordering food. Worked well on both phones. 3. Google Maps on my husband's Android trumped Google Maps and Apple Maps on my iPhone. The maps on my iPhone were not updated. There was an entire freeway missing, as well as eateries, especially outside Tokyo. Google Maps (Android) for using the public transport network was very precise. 4. Mobal e-SIM worked perfectly on my iPhone. My husband tried both Ubigi and Mobal on his two-year-old Android, and they didn't work. He ended up having to buy an expensive e-SIM at Narita on arrival. 5. Cash in king. Have plenty of it on hand. 6. Download a Suica card into your iPhone's Apple Wallet and top it up along the way. My husband could not get this in his Android wallet, so he bought a physical "Welcome Suica" card at the airport train terminal on arrival. Chiba is an amazing city and because Star Wars Celebration...
Chiba is an amazing city and because Star Wars Celebration 2025 was held there this year, I had to come and visit. The city is only about an hour away from Tokyo and going there from Chiba was easy to do. Locally speaking, Chiba offers many different places to eat (some of the best donuts I've ever had came from a donut shop called Uni Donuts close to the hotel I stayed at) and a cool Anime hobby store.Guest review byOliver - 10.0

Our trip to Nikko was nothing short of magical. The town is surrounded by some of the most beautiful forests and breathtaking waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Every corner feels like stepping into a postcard—lush, serene, and full of natural wonder. The town itself has such charm, with its cozy streets, warm hospitality, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. We stayed for three nights, which gave us time to explore, but we truly wish we had stayed longer. We liked that the city was only a short train ride to many other cities like downtown Toyko and Yokohama.
