The are several apartments with private onsen and some with view over the mountain side. A very tasty and rich breakfast (Japanese or western) is available in the main building. Great Restaurants and a cafe with delicious cake and views are nearby. But the most lovely point was this: In Japan you usually meet many respectful, friendly people. However, the staff in Spa Greenness was extraordinary. Already the information exchange when planning details weeks before our arrival was both cordial and professional. On location everybody was helpful and friendly, be it for a special breakfast or very helpful to book a ferry for the next travel section. So I leave my review here: Overall, it was all great. Room condition, onsen(condition and number of), food, staff. I've been to ryokan a few times, this ryokan was better than I expected. Actually it kept on raining during my stay. Usually, I don't like rainy days but I've change my mind-a scenery of rainy day have a charm of its own, it does. Sitting in the open-air bath and watching the rain-soaked mountain and valley was rest and relaxation I imagined. Not a great deal to do or see in Oita. The castle ruins holds some interest. A very friendly man in a temporary office in the car park helpfully explained more about the castle and it's moats. Morning walk along the waterway when there were not many tourists was peaceful and enjoyable. The are lots of small shops on the main street, but might be too crowded to enjoy. Onta Yaki Pottery Village was a terrific day trip, although we did have to take a long taxi ride to get there. The 7 hells was the reason we went to Beppu and they were interesting but I'm not 100% sure it was worth travelling specifically for. Better to have it as a day trip from Fukuoka. If you do go, don't go to the 'Crocodile' one, I'm no expert in Crocodile health, but those poor things really did not look in very good condition. I loved this town and could easily live here. I was lucky enough to catch Ukai (cormorant fishing on the Mikuma River while enjoying a dinner cruise). It has a laid-back vibe, with some excellent dining options close to the station. When driving into Beppu, I figured it was just another town. It was towards the end of 3 weeks driving around Kyushu and we were weary! While people come here for the Seven Hells, we found Beppu to be quite charming. Although quiet, we thought it had a lovely vibe and some busy restaurants to choose from in the evening. The hells are touristy and there are a couple I probably wouldn’t recommend but it’s what Beppu is known for. We went to Yufuin and Beppu, Yufuin by the touristy train (book a month earlier and reserve your seats!), then we took the bus from Yufuin to Beppu and did the onsen tours on our own by bus.
