It is the most beautiful property in the city. It is perfectly maintained, to the point I thought we were the first ever guests to stay there.     We've lived in Merida for 2 years and Campeche is our favorite get-away. Seaside on the Gulf with a long and beautiful Malecon. Any type of restaurant you could ask for. The entire Historical Centro is very walkable. The portions of the remaining fortification are impressive. Plenty of tours to take and sightseeing to do. In our travels in Mexico, we have not encountered a nicer main Mercado. Not the largest, but one of the cleanest with some of the best produce we've found. They do not have Uber, but the taxis are reasonably priced.

    It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology.

    It is well placed for some fascinating archaeology. But you need to be up for a "half horse" town. To get to a basic restaurant we walked through the middle of roadworks. Most roads giving access to the hotel were closed for road works and of course there are no diversions..you just work it out! But the archaeology is fabulous though to get to Calakmul was a 3 hour drive each way .

    Isla Aguada is now a magical pueblo and it has a ways to go to live up to that name. It is a scrubby town that is trying to improve. We were there off season and on a Monday when most things were closed, so it is probably much more lively in the summer. Lots of seafood restaurants and the main draw is that a boat will take you out to see the dolphins. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but it was great fun and we saw a lot of dolphins. Our guide told us the time from March to August is better, the water is calmer and clearer and there are more dolphins, plus sea turtles.

    Campeche City is a very laid back city.

    Campeche City is a very laid back city. Younger visitors may think too much so, but for older (non-party) visitors, it has everything you could ask for. History, shopping, food. Tours of the city and to Mayan ruins are readily available. Excellent mercado.

    Beautiful site right off the road.

    Beautiful site right off the road. Walk to the Mirador Maya Hotel. The grounds are beautifully maintained, and as of September, 2023, you can climb everything. There's no pyramid, but the main structure is very tall and impressive. Bring bug spray. The mosquitoes are pretty intense.

    We read incredible reviews of Campeche in both The Lonely...

    We read incredible reviews of Campeche in both The Lonely Planet and The Rough Guide, as to how beautiful it was and so planned to stay two nights, however, we ended up staying only one as there wasn’t that much to do there, and actually preferred Valladolid and Merida. We didn’t think it was any prettier than other places, and we preferred to have an extra night in Merida which we thought more stunning with more character.

    Xpujil itself is not worth visiting.

    Xpujil itself is not worth visiting. It is a good town to stay if you are travelling trough the area (for example when visiting Calakmul) and need a place to sleep. There is a small supermarket and a nice pizza restaurant. Be aware that there are only two banks and their ATM's at the time of our visit both of them did not have any money in them for two days.
